Al Areen Holding Company Helps Turn Manama into a “Green Capital”

Al Areen Holding Company is backing a nation-wide drive to create a greener environment friendly Bahrain. The scheme “Green Capital," is set to plant 5,000 trees in 43 public places such as schools, youth centers, healthcare facilities and residential areas throughout Manama.

Al Areen has made a significant contribution towards the total cost, which is put at BD 50,000. It is planned to extend the “Green Capital” project to cover the whole of Bahrain.

The “Green Capital” scheme, under the patronage of the Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife Chairman and Southern Governor, HH Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, is proposed and managed by Mr. Abdulhakeem Al Shimmiry, a board member of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce.

The whole operation is being funded by private donations and with the support of leading companies on the island. Over the next three months 5,000 samplings of fruitful trees will be planted in key areas of the Capital Governorate, including Adliya, the Diplomatic Area, Gudaibiya, Hoora, Juffair, Seef, Um Al Hassam, Zinj, Mahooz, Salmaniya and Segaiya.

The fruitful trees will include date palms, almond (loze), cinchona (knar), Indian fig or prickly pear (sobar) and fig (teen).

Eng. Waleed Saffy, Al Areen Holding Company’s General Manager, said: “As an environment friendly company, we are keen to support projects such as this, which help make our country a greener and better place for us and generations to come. Protection of the environment is essential and we believe that this project will enhance awareness."

“Since its inception, Al Areen has always supported initiatives that aim at protecting and preserving the environment. Al Areen has taken many steps to protect and enhance the natural environment surrounding our construction sites,” added Eng. Saffy.

In thanking Al Areen for its sponsorship, Mr. Al Shimmiry said: “We are grateful for the support of the Al Areen Holding Company to further beautify Bahrain and, more importantly, to educate the public and our youth in particular of the value and necessity of environmental protection and conservation.

“This is a project of great national significance and falls in line with the Kingdom’s sustainable development policies and programs. As part of this initiative, a National Day for the Green Capital will be organized to promote agricultural and environmental awareness.”
